Hospitality & Society is a new international social sciences journal which looks at the industry’s connections with social and cultural processes and structures which will hopefully lead to the developing of new approaches to the study of hospitality

I’ve had a quick peruse of the contents of the 1st issue and it does look like it will be a very interesting new title..

As far as the book reviews are concerned, we have several copies of O’Gorman; I’m not sure if the ‘Extending Hospitality’ title is entirely relevant, but I think I’ll order a copy of ‘Kitchens’ by Gary Fine.. Please speak up if you’d like to see ‘Extending Hospitality’ in the library stock !

Hospitality Action Week

Hospitality Action is the trade charity for the hospitality industry, and offers a range of services to past and present employees in the industry. All week, organisations and individuals up and down the country will be fundraising in a huge variety of ways!

This semester all UCB students have access to a new service from the library. Connect@UCB is an online help desk which you can visit to get support in finding useful information. Simply log on during the advertised hours and a member of staff will be available to help with your enquiry - perfect if you're unable to make it into College!

The desk will initially be open each weekday from 10am - 12pm and 2pm - 4pm.

TripAdvisor's Top 25

London has been well and truly overlooked in the recent TripAdvisor awards. The results do not bode well for the Olympics, now just 2 years away, and it would appear London need to substantially up their game in order to provide the standard of accommodation expected.

Top of Trip Advisors list was Rudding Park near Harrogate, which was also voted 6th in the list of Best Luxury Hotels in the World! Manor Coach House in Worcester was placed 2nd. The full list of 25 can be found here

Cherry ripe...

The previous posting lead me here... Yes, for a mere £30 a year you can rent your own cherry tree! For that, you will receive 6 newsletters in the year updating you on the progress of the crop, a blossom walk to enjoy in the spring along with your own personal (human?!) point of contact! The site claims that the average tree's yield is something like 20 kilos and considering you pay upwards of £6 a kilo in the shops on average, it looks like this is pretty good value, assuming you are able to get to the orchard of course!

Well, it may not seem like it at the moment, but Summer is theoretically upon us! and food festivals are taking place around the country as we speak. The Hampshire Food Festival began just yesterday (July 8th) and continues to the end of the month; but if you head a little further south you could check out the seafood village at the Dorset Seafood Festival (11th - 13th July). Alternatively, if you're planning a northerly trip this weekend, how does the Pontefract Liquorice Festival sound? Enjoy the famous Liquorice Day in the Town Centre, and sample fresh locally produced, and international Liquorice products.

If you're looking for something to tickle your taste buds next weekend, Saturday (19th July) is the first ever National Cherry Day... The culmination of 'CherryAid', a Foodloversbritain.com campaign to save the British cherry industry. There will be events up and down the country including demonstrations, orchard walks and cherry tastings at selected Marks and Spencer stores.

And talking of cherries... Actually, I think this warrants a separate posting!

Thought it was about time I did some new postings! I have an event to publicise, a resource to promote and some free journals to give away! This one is concerned with the resource which is called, simply ‘Methodology’. Not only is it free, but it’s also very useful for anyone interested in research methods or looking at qualitative/ quantitative research and statistics. Methodology is actually run by SAGE, so the journals section will link purely to their publications, but all other sections are totally unbiased. I’ve put a link to the site in the relevant link area to the right.

Ludlow Day

The event is another of those from the Institute of Hospitality: Heart of England branch. It takes place on Saturday 28th June at the Ludlow Food Centre. Starting at 11am, the day will include coffee, and pastries on arrival, a presentation by Production Manager George Rizzardini on the start-up, progress and future developments of the centre , plus lunch and a days programme of events incorporating tours of the production kitchens, dairy, and coffee shop. The price of the event is £12, and to book you need to fill in the booking form which can be found here.

As this is my last day before my Easter Hols, I thought I’d have a look at Easter Fare again.. Trying to steer away from chocolate this time.. Not literally! Oh no… Just for the purposes of this posting! Lets start with the BBC (A very good place to start?) I’m not sure whether I fancy the Norwegian ‘lutefisk’ (Rehydrated dried salt cod) ! or the polish soup with sausage, horseradish and hard-boiled eggs, or indeed the Greek Easter 'Treat' - kokkoresti (spit-roasted lambs' innards wrapped in intestine) Lovely!?!?!

Hmm... Let’s move on…How about Finland ? Mammi seems very popular.. So, what is it? A dark brown porridge made of water and sweetened rye malt, baked in a slow oven in cardboard boxes! Not terribly tempting...!

Are things any better in Germany? 'Eier in gruener Sosse', which translates as 'eggs in green sauce'? no? No, I agree.. What about Italy.. Surely, there's something to satisfy the most discerning palate here.. Lets try the Pastiera - A pie filled with Ricotta cheese and studded with Candied fruits…. oh dear... Lets go further afield... Mexico... their speciality? Shrimp fritters!!

You know what? Here's to chocolate... and hot cross buns and Simnel cake! I think I know where I would rather be spending Easter! What about you?

I'm assuming that the news stories will automatically change within the BLOG... Rest assured...I shall be monitoring this!

Jemima Packington from Pershore in Worcestershire, could give you a few ‘tips’ for the future… She tosses her asparagus tips in the air and analyses how they land! She’s been making predictions this way since the age of 9 and says it only works with British Varieties.

Talking of British varieties, April 23rd sees the start of the 2008 (3rd) British Asparagus Festival. The Festival, which runs until 21st June gets under way with the Great English Asparagus Run, at 8am on the morning of the 23rd April, followed by many asparagus related events throughout the next couple of months including the Asparagus auction which has taken taken place at the famous National Trust property, the Fleece Inn, in Bretforton, for decades. You can even book on an Aspara’bus’ tour! I think I might just give the event a try.. and I’m definitely going to order a few copies of “a Passion for Asparagus” for the library

U C B go F A B!

If you've a little spare cash and time, why not pop along to Victoria Square in Central Birmingham tomorrow (Thursday 6th March). As part of the Fairtrade Fortnight (23rd Feb-8th March), the Fair-Trade Association Birmingham (FAB) are organising an event here, running from 11am - 3pm. There's a chance to sample some of the fair trade food products which are now available in shops around the city, listen to live music, and browse the market stalls. As you're browsing, look out for the stall highlighting the best entries from the UCB's Fairtrade recipe competition. Dishes all feature FairTrade products as their main ingredients. And look out for the Fairtrade themed cake baked by none other than UCB staff!

Brewers and CSR

The New Molson Coors Brewing Company website, outlines it’s website corporate responsibility commitments, including alcohol responsibility, energy conservation, recycling and water stewardship, and charitable giving. The company are particularly keen to receive viewer feedback on this, it’s first corporate responsibility reporting effort, by emailing them at corporate.responsibility@molsoncoors.com

Other brewing companies producing "corporate responsibility" literature which can be viewed or downloaded include Whitbread, SabMiller and Scottish and Newcastle. The Brewers of Europe organisation mention several companies and their specific initiatives within their Worldwide Brewing Alliance Document (starts on page 73). Included here are Adnams and Carlsberg (Adnams... one of my personal favs; and winners of the 2007 Carbon Trust Innovation Award) :-)

I've got some spare copies of the 2007 Special issue of 'Link' Magazine - The publication of the HLST (HEA). Contents include: 'First yr Undergraduates' approaches to e-learning'; 'Virtual Learning Environments for teaching hospitality, leisure, sport and Tturism'; and 'Embedding intellectual and transferable skills in undergraduate courses in tourism, hospitality and leisure' - Please come and get your copy from the Subject Librarian office a.s.a.p. first come, first served!

In addition, I also have some information, again from the HLST (HEA) about a forum which may be interesting to some of you. It's an overnighter at the National College for School Leadership in Nottingham, on the 11th/12 th February. The leaflets I have, include a booking form, but you can also get the necessary info by clicking here and choosing the link within the first entry on the events page.

Ok, so those were the 'docs' now for the 'Dos'.....!

In fact it's another event organised by the Heart of England Branch of the Institute of Hospitality. My last entry on here was was for a previous event of theirs at the Baggies football ground, which I attended and which, despite a poor attendence was very interesting! Their next event is a trip to the newly refurbished Becketts Farm in Wythall, on Thursday 24th January. The site now has an extended farm shop, a new commercial kitchen which will be used as a demonstration kitchen & training centre for the industry as well as a conference centre & catering venue. At a charge of just £5, the event will begin at 6.00pm with a sampling/tasting session in the farm shop. There will then be an opportunity to tour the new Demonstation & Training Kitchen with some live demonstrations, and presentations.

The 'bare' facts.....

Are you a somnambulist? Have you ever wandered naked down a hotel corridor?
This week, A survey carried out by Travelodge ‘revealed’ (if you’ll pardon the pun!) that nude sleepwalking (particularly amongst men) is on the rise. The results, which exhibit (sorry!) a seven fold increase in sleepwalking customers, compared to 2006, indicate that a staggering 95% of the hotel chain's sleepwalkers have been naked men. The following are the most popular requests at the reception desk:

- Where is the bathroom?
- Can I check out as I am late for work?
- Do you have a copy of todays paper?

The Hotels reception desks now have a supply of towels placed on them for covering up the gentlemens… errmm, embarrassment!

15 year old Louis Barnett from Kinver needed no golden ticket to realise his dream! He has just employed his own mum and dad in his ‘Chokolit’ business! Self-confessed ‘Foody’ Louis, left school at 11 after being diagnosed with Dyslexia and Dyspraxia and began making chocolates from home, but his business has expanded to the point where he has now had to move premises to Bridgnorth. The Metro, the Caterer and the Times have all reported this week on the high profile campaign in Italy headed by Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s to ban garlic from Italian restaurants. Such is Mr Berlusconi’s aversion, he has even been known to issue breath fresheners to officials and electoral candidates and actually banned it from the 2001 G8 summit menu! Leading Italian Chef Antonello Colonna, is more sceptical, reporting that he had “put garlic into dishes at official dinners for Berlusconi without him realising ! The word Garlic (Latin; Allium sativum) has its orgins in Old English gārlēac, meaning, "spear leek". it has been used in Italian cooking since Roman times, when Pliny the Elder offered a list of its benefits in his Natural History. It can be used as seasoning or condiment, and the medicinal properties and benefits are widely known, as these sites bear out:

Chewing bunches of parsley after consumption helps to reduce the after effects and leaving the garlic to soak in water for several hours BEFORE eating should maintain the taste but eliminate the odours.. but Belinda Welsman has gone one better. Her ‘snoggable garlic’ company which has been going for a number of years, produces a range of different flavoured garlics including smoked and hot chili, and uses a secret recipe to ensure the odours of the garlic are eliminated, "My garlic is famous for containing all the properties of fresh garlic but without the after smell" . I’ve actually bought some from the farmers market in Halesowen and very good it is too!

According to Mintel in 2006 (you’ll need to go to Mintel via Athens and type in 'Smoothies' as your search, to view the whole report) , there has been a steady rise in sales of smoothies within the market for soft drinks which is indicative of the trend away from carbonates in favour of healthier, more natural alternatives.

English Wines - A joy or a Joke?

Despite winning a major award at the International Wine Challenge in London last month, Wine writer Malcolm Gluck and other experts were not impressed with this or indeed other English offerings at a recent tasting. Here's what the panel had to say. But, it appears that Malcolm Gluck has "long been the bane of English winemakers (see the full article here) Webmaster Bob Tarr asks us to remember that there will be good, mediocre and dreadful wines in any wine-producing country. In fact, I'm a week or so late with this posting I've just realised, as the 26th May-3rd June was "English Wine Week" ! However, the site is still there with lots of links to vineyards and independent wine merchants.

I for one think we should embrace our continuing and improving efforts and scoff the wine rather than scoff at it...

A Slice of Skoda

If, like me you've been wondering about the new Skoda Fabia ad and whether they really DID make a whole edible cake, the answer is kind of. It appears that no-one actually got to taste the finished product, as the studio lights rendered the car unfit for human consumption, although a couple of sections were kept for posterity. You can watch a video following the making process which includes a complete list of ingredients should you decide to make your own at home - (kind of Pimp my ride, and pimp that snack rolled into one!) - provided you have 180 eggs and 42 kilograms of chocolate you were wondering what to do with!

Cake or biscuit?

We've been having a debate here in the Subject Librarian office. Could we prove once and for all that a Jaffa Cake is indeed a CAKE and not a biscuit! Lets consider the evidence... a) A Jaffa Cake has a sponge base b) It goes HARD when stale; biscuits go soft... c) The word biscuit is derived from the french meaning 'baked twice' ? Is a jaffa cake baked twice?

They're certainly classed as cakes for the purposes of taxation - In 1991 McVities found themselves having to justify their decision to classify them as cakes due to the UK law that exempts biscuits and cakes from VAT ("zero rated") but classes chocolate covered biscuits as luxury items and subjects THEM to VAT at 17.5%. McVitie's produced a 12” Jaffa Cake to illustrate that they were just minicakes and won their case thus. -

BUT does that Prove it either way?

How about the scientific arguments highlighted in the article 'Are Jaffa Cakes really biscuits?' published in The Online journal “Journal of Unlikely Science”

and not forgetting the treatment given in the wonderfully entitled 'A Nice Cup of Tea and a Sit Down' (by 'Nicey' and 'Wifey', ) both in print and Internet versions.

On the other hand, consider this. Taken from the official HM revenue and Customs website, the term Jaffa Cakes appear in the 'Zero-rated' column but under section 3.4.2 - Biscuits! Now it gets confusing....

Hospitality and Urban Regeneration

On 14th June 2007 the CIHMR (Centre for International Hospitality Management Research are presenting the first in a series of research seminars aimed at raising the profile of hospitality research in the UK, at Sheffield Hallam University. Entitled 'Hospitality in Urban Regeneration'. The Centre are looking for presentation submissions from anyone in the very early stages of their research, as a basis for further exploration and debate.

Ever checked in to a hotel after a really stressful day or the day before a big event and worried that you weren't going to be able to get a good night’s sleep? Well, Travelodge have come up with one idea to help guests unwind and relax – goldfish!

Guests checking into The Travelodge at Birmingham’s Fort Dunlop can participate in the trial of the Goldfish Hire Service by requesting a fish therapy room when they check in, and then following the hotel's guide to relaxation. Surveys were undertaken and Animal psychologist and sleep experts were consulted in the development of the service! The service was probably the brainchild of Travelodge’s relatively newly appointed ‘Director of sleep'; Wayne Munnelly. The first in the world to be appointed to this post, Wayne is paid to test such things as mattr ess tension and pillow density! Following hot on the heels of his 'cuddillow' no doubt!

All this has lead me to a very interesting blog in which there's some very funny pictures of people bed jumping...

but I think that’s probably for another day!

Representatives were in College today demonstrating the websites for Just-food; and Just-drinks and discussing different membership packages. They are going to set us up with a trial to both sites, but for this trial each interested party will require a separate log-in

Researchers at Columbia University have found that regularly tucking into a full English Breakfast could double our risk of developing Chronic Lung Diesase, and other debilitating chest conditions more traditionally associated with smoking., such as bronchitis, emphysema and chronic obstructive airways disease.
As Britons appetite for cured meat products is increasing, our susceptibility to these conditions is also growing, in addition to the raising of our Cholesterol levels.

Chocaholics...

Have you munched your way through all your Easter Eggs then? I’ve still got a tiny bit of mine left! I know it’s nearly 2 weeks ago now, but I thought you might enjoy a few choccy facts…

We Brits lead the way with our spending on the confectionery, with an average of £72 per head a year, and also on the consumption; devouring 10 kilos on average, or 25% of all the choccy eaten across Europe. Last year we managed, as a nation, to put away 80 million Easter eggs AND 500 MILLION cream eggs!!

The First chocolate egg was produced by Fry’s in 1873

The most expensive egg ever offered was the Diamond Stella Egg last year – A chocolate egg laden with diamonds. It cost a wopping £50,000 !

And finally, the largest egg ever made was a chocolate and marshmallow one, recorded in South Africa in 1996. It weighed 4,068 kilos and it had to be supported by an internal steel frame!

Billed as "The most innovative Food and Drink Event", the International Food and Drink Event" is being held at ExCel in London between 18-21 March. Full programme details can be found here. The British Institute of Inn-keeping (BII) are in the middle of a series of seminars discussing the Introduction of the Smoking ban in public places. The ‘Smoking Roadshow’ comes to Birmingham (Aston Villa ground) on the 29th March.

SPRIG is a UK organisation promoting information in hospitality, leisure, tourism and sport.
On the 16th March A SPRIG event is being held here at the College. The programme is aimed at post-16 educators in hospitality and catering and details of the day can be found by clicking here. Included will be a presentation from the HCIMA about the internet resources that students can access via the HCIMA as part of the educational membership scheme (this includes our students as we are members of the scheme.)
